Bending So Not to Break
In belief and in life, being rigid and inflexible can destroy you. Just as the trees planted by the sea must bend to withstand the wind, so we too must be able to bend so that we do not break. When I refuse to consider other ideas, I am refusing to learn and grow. When I refuse to listen, I may be refusing God's direction.
When I put God in a box and say that I know everything about him/her because I have read the christian Bible, we are naive and give God little credit. When we become right fighters we are assuming that we know God better than the next person and we are belittling their walk with God. To insist that we must tell them the truth and change them to be like us or they will be damned, hints that we do not trust God to walk with them in his way. Sometimes we do not let God get a word in because we talk over him and that is most disrespectful.
My own belief system is always a work in progress as anyone's should be. I still sing the songs of my youth, but I am no longer devastated at the idea that those things I learned as a child may not be the absolute. In fact I am thrilled that there may be more. Each day my image of God grows as I open myself up and take in the world.
So I will bend. I will be flexible. And in doing so, I will grow, and not only survive, but thrive in God's greatness.
