Finding God in the Eyes of a Dog

I searched in preachers, in scriptures, prayer books
Around and around in mens' hearts I looked
Afraid and lost, confused and mad
He came to me and could sense that I was sad.

I found God in the eyes of a dog.
In my pain he brought me out of the fog.
In his look he said “I love you, I’m here.”
With his kindness, he took away my fear.

Now I look in creation I see
He’s everywhere looking back at me.
Watching over me waiting to say,
"I’m here with you every step of the way."

Among the trees, among the sand.
I feel him, touch him, he's close to my hand
We walk and talk, we laugh and play.
I find my innocence, my courage finally to say…

I found God in the eyes of a dog.
In my pain he brought me out of the fog.
In his look he said “I love you, I’m here.”
With his kindness, he took away my fear.

Today my heart is in terrible pain
Words cut so deep, so deep in my vein
A quiet spirit and peace I lack
He whispers to me, "I want you to look back."

"You saw love in the eyes of a dog
Without question, he kept no log.
Of ways you’ve hurt him, he didn’t recall.
My love inside him can overcome it all."

I found God in the eyes of a dog.
In my pain he brought me out of the fog.
In his look he said “I love you, I’m here.”
With his kindness, he took away my fear.

  1. I have always thought that incarnational theology should be extended to all creatures because surely they, too, bear something of the essence of their Creator! You captured that nicely, Jamie. Well done!
